I had the fortunate opportunity this past January to join Tom Coyne in his golffice—it has a legit hole cut in the floor, among many other items of interest—for two express purposes: 1. Talk about Bernard Darwin, grandson of the great naturalist and, perhaps, the best golf writer yet known; 2. Discuss Tom’s excellent and enjoyable Paper Tiger, which had been recently read by the Broken Tee Society’s Book Club, which I’m happy to be a part of.
You can find recordings of both discussions below. There is much more I wish I’d said about Bernard. For another time, surely. I also blanked and cold-topped an answer to Tom’s question about which courses he belonged to or loved to play (Woking, Aberdovey, Worplesdon, Hoylake, the Old Course, others as well).
For a more complete picture of Bernardo, I encourage you to dig into my essay, “A Possibly Mis-Spent Life,” which appeared in the recently issued Golfer’s Journal no. 23.
