Golf's Peculiar Bliss
Really cool footage of Updike playing his home course of Myopia Hunt Club, overlayed with one of his essays read by the man himself
This past Wednesday, I passed along a short sequence of thoughts on one of John Updike’s great pieces of golf-writing on how life is surely not too short for golf.
As a way of following up, I thought I’d pass along this charming video of Updike playing his home course, Myopia Hunt Club. Overlaying the footage of his play is the author reading from one his essays on the game. Enjoy.
Once you’re done with that, click through to an essay of mine that goes by the title “Peculiar Bliss,” and is about Updike’s golf-writings (and Dante’s Divine Comedy and marriage and fatherhood and shitty diapers). It’s from between the covers of Golfer’s Journal no. 9.
